Bits and bobs supoorting guerrilla gardening

Listed below are a small range of products associated with GuerrillaGardening.org. They include Richard's book (in English, French, German and Korean) and Kabloom Seed Bombs. For many years we harvested lavender from our south London guerrilla garden and made fragrant pillows*. We also collaborated with a capsule collection of clothing made from recycled tents stocked at Selfridges and this website. Thanks very much for your support over the years.

A few years into my guerrilla gardening I got invited by several publishers to write a book. It was well timed moment of good fortune. I'd be made redundant from the day job working on advertising strategy to reduce the nation's teenage pregnancies, reduce sexually transmitted infections, listen to Johnny Vaughan on Capital Radio and use eBay.co.uk (a potent cocktail of strategising). The publishers had all sorts of ideas what the book should be, a simple how to, something funny, a crusade, a glossy flick. I chose to write a book with Bloomsbury and an amazing editor called Richard Atkinson that was a little of all of these. He encouraged me to dig deep into the many stories out there as well as my own. He gave me time and budget to travel, to talk, to photograph and learn. I studied in classes every week for a year to improve my horticultural knowledge and qualifications. After two years the result was "On Guerrilla Gardening, a handbook for gardening without boundaries". Our aim was to inform, inspire and entertain. Reviewers agreed. We updated it a year later for the paperback. More recently editions have been published in French, German and Korean - the German edition is particularly rich with big format photography. It is now often available second hand for a great price.

Darren at Kabloom was quick to appreciate that ready made seed bombs could be rather useful. Making seed bombs yourself is both messy and often ineffective (read my guide about seed bombs here). So if you are a guerrilla who does not want to linger or for some reason cannot use more effective traditional gardening methods (perhaps a place is inaccesible), then I recommend getting the bombs lovingly made by Darren and his team in Glasgow. I helped test some early prototypes and have pointed many people his way, and received some seed bombs from Darren in return that I give to children (generally socially acceptable vs a plastic weapon).

I met Hannah of WithinTent at a festival. A costume designer by day, she had the genius idea of using discarded tents from festivals as coats. I bought one. Then when Selfridges asked me to collaborate in their Wonder Windows and invited me to bring some unique items to their shop, I asked her to join in. Every coat is different. Hannah also came up with a unique tool bag design which we embroidered with a GuerrillaGardening.org badge. Hand made in East London, and a bargain at. £25 for a bag and £65.

*We ceased harvesting lavender as we eventually reaslised it was not a healthy activity due to the particulate pollution embedded in the lavender. Our lungs may yet pay the price for those well intentioned endeavours.
